Reiki is an ancient Tibetan system that works with a person’s energy system. The term Reiki stems from the Japanese rei meaning universal or intelligent, and ki for energy.
In this modality, the practitioner places her hands over specific areas of the clothed body. This allows for the flow of energy which is particularly beneficial in supporting blocked or diminished regions thus promoting a sense of harmony, alignment and relaxation on the physical, emotional, mental and spirit levels.
Reiki’s therapeutic benefits are being recognized in the mainstream. As such, it is being incorporated into traditional healing practices. For example, Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and New York Presbyterian hospitals offer reiki as a complementary treatment for certain patients. The well known cardiologist, Dr. Mehmet Oz, who directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital, has stated that he has incorporated reiki into the operating room.
